Willie Jorrin looking for bigger and better things
LOS ANGELES (Sept. 25, 2003) - Despite preparing for
the big Showtime pay-per-view showdown on Oct. 4 between Evander Holyfield and
James "Lights Out" Toney, Goossen Tutor Promotions hasn't missed a
step in its quest to continue to sign the top fighters in the world.
The newest member to sign with the California-based
promotional company - which promotes Toney - is former WBC super-bantamweight
champion Willie Jorrin.
Born and raised in Sacramento where he continues to
be a fan favorite, Jorrin (29-1-1, with 13 KOs) hopes Goossen Tutor can help
him regain the title he lost just last November to tough Oscar Larios. It was
his second fight against Larios, Jorrin defending his title with a unanimous
decision over Larios in January, 2001.
In an effort to get him back in the title hunt as soon
as possible, Goossen Tutor hasn't wasted any time. Coming off a second-round
TKO win over John Hoffman this past April, Jorrin, 33, is scheduled to
fight the co-feature on the Nov. 6 fight headlined by former IBF cruiserweight
champ Vassiliy Jirov (32-1, 28 KOs) of Scottsdale and Joseph Kiwanuka (27-5-2,
20 KOs) of Las Vegas. That fight is scheduled for the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix
, AZ and will be televised by Fox Net Sports as part of its "Sunday Night
Fights," series.
No opponent has been signed yet, but Jorrin is happy
to see his career get on the right track. His first fight under Goossen will
be televised.
"We chose Goossen Tutor because they're No. 1 in
their line of work," Jorrin said. "I want to be world champion again
and Dan (Goossen) can get it done for us."
During his 22 months as a world champion, Jorrin was
seldom seen on national TV. He said that was another reason he signed with Goossen
Tutor.
"Willie wants to be seen on TV and recognized," said
his wife, Victoria, who is a part of any career decision he makes. "While
he was champion, he was hardly ever on TV, and that's a crime. He was shown on
ESPN once or twice and that‘s it. He wants to get some good exposure and Dan
can do that for him."
Jorrin said he wants one or two tune-up fights and then
he wants to fight for the title again within the year.
"I want to get some good exposure and I can do that by fighting
the big names," he said. "I want to take it to the next level and the
only way to do that is to be seen fighting the best."
